J-3 Cub Construction Project Session #17

J-3 Cub Wheels Complete

This is the last report on making the Cub wheels. I am amazed at how light this laminated balsa wheel is even with the aluminum tube in the center. The picture below shows the wheel on my Acculab scale,
which weighs rounded up to the nearest gram. The read out shows one gram so the wheel weighs somewhere between 1/2 and 1-1/2 grams.

To shape the second wheel, I laid the drill press down on its back. Here you see the wheel spinning in a vertical plane (stop action) and the sanding board I use for shaping.

This shows the two little fat Cub wheels on their landing gear wire axles. Again, the wire axles get cut off, a retainer is installed, and then the hub caps get installed in the recess on the outsides.

This shows a frontal view of the wheels................Tandy
