47 J-3 Cub Left
Wing Panel Covered
I have been away from the J-3 Cub project for a
while, but I am now back working on it again. I just finished covering the
left wing panel with the yellow tissue supplied with the Herr kit as shown
below.
I covered the bottom of the panel first and then
the top. I shrunk the tissue on both sides of the panel at the same time. I
used a light mist of alcohol applied with the spray bottle shown below from
my wife's hair stylist. It puts out the finest atomized spray.
Once the tissue was shrunk, I brushed on one coat
of 50/50 Randolph's tautening nitrate dope as shown below. As all of you
know, the out board tip on the upper surface is double contoured and a pain
in the butt to cover with a single piece. The tissue covered the panel very
smooth, except right at the tip. I am sorry to say that as much as I tried,
I still ended up with a couple of little wrinkles or puckers at the bow tip
between the two spars. There was just too much slack in the tissue to
completely shrink up smooth. It not too noticeable, but I know they are
there. :O< For you experienced tissue covering guys, do you cover the out
board tip on the upper surface with a separate piece of tissue, or what? How
do you get this area to cover smooth?......................Tandy
