 Sailplane Construction Project Session #68

Comet Sailplane Project

I finished up the front end of the cowl today. The picture below shows the first layer of 3/16" balsa sheet being glued onto the front face of the cowl. Notice the lateral grain direction. To apply pressure to glue joint, I laid a maple board on the back of the cowl and placed a heavy iron vise on top of the board.

The picture below shows the second layer of 3/16" balsa sheet being glued onto the front face of the cowl.

I trued up the inside of the three cowl rings and sanded the outside to contour as shown below. More finish sanding will be required, but this is all I am going to do for now.

This picture shows the cowl installed on the fuselage along with an APC prop. There is a full 1/8" clearance between the prop and the front face of the cowl.

This picture shows a close up of the front of the cowl.

The cowl design and development is in good shape so this will conclude the work on the cowl for the present time. I will now get back to covering the rudder and stab so I can eventually do a weight and balance to determine where to locate the pylon primary structure.....................Tandy
